Project Title

Origin-of-cellular-Life’ / Out-of-equilibrium biophysical Systems

Brief summary

Our lab pursues experimental biophysical research. We are interested in the spatiotemporal patterning of living and chemical systems. The lab investigates how the spatial organization of molecules can spontaneously arise. Specifically, we aim to understand how i) temperature gradients, the simplest out-of-equilibrium environments can lead to the selective enrichment of phase-separated protocells, which might have been present during the origin of cellular life.

ii) We seek to understand how emergent material properties of such phase-separated compartments contribute to their distinct physiochemical identities and functions.

Qualification of the candidate

For this experimental project, we seek a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to complement our lab from a biophysical, physical or quantitative biology perspective.

The candidate should hold a PhD in a relevant discipline and should be familiar with multiple of the following concepts: lab-on-a-chip technologies, microfluidics, next generation sequencing, RNA-protein interactions, polymer biophysics, rheology, phase separation programming for hardware control. Excellent knowledge of English is required.

Salary and social benefits will be in accordance with the regulations of the German TVöD Bund (the salary agreement for public service employees, up to level E13). The contract will be limited to 2 years with the potential of extension. We especially encourage women to apply. This full-time position is available immediately.

Applications should include:
a cover letter indicating the motivation to apply for this position, a CV including a publication list, a concise description of previous research accomplishments (<1 page), and contact details of at least 2 approachable academic referees. There is no deadline.
